Kids Fishing Day 2015

August 5, 2015 - Once again this year, members of Pope Leo XIII Council 10804 participated in the Annual Rodgers Family Kids Fishing Day (KFD) event on the Lynnhaven Fishing pier in Virginia Beach. The Council is one of five community organizations which support the event, a project of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Southeast Virginia (BGCSEVA).

A record 193 children, ranging in age from 6 to 18, participated in the event, and for most of them this was their first ever fishing experience, their first time on a fishing pier, and for a good many of them, the very first fish they've ever caught.

The kids caught more than 500 fish of 14 species. Overall, 343 Tidewater children and adults participated in the event, which began at 8:00 a.m. and lasted until noon.

Each child was outfitted with a fully rigged and brand new spin fishing pole that they took home with them at the end of the KFD event, along with a T-shirt that included the Knights of Columbus logo.  This was the 28th annual KFD event.

Financial support for the event came from the Virginia Saltwater Recreational Fishing Development Fund. Prior to the KFD event, an educational program was presented in all seven cities of the Boys and Girls Club about fishing in the Chesapeake Bay. This year, there was also a 30 minute Power Point presentation on Sea Turtles, followed by a hands-on demonstration about how to safely use a spin fishing pole.
