The annual Columbus Day ceremonies in Washington, D.C. could not be held at the usual location at the Columbus Memorial in front of Union Station because of the federal government shutdown. Neither the National Park Service nor the Marine Corps band could participate at all, and the federal property on which the monument lies was unavailable. The National Columbus Celebration Association, which sponsors the yearly gathering, moved the 2013 ceremonies to Casa Italiana, the hall next door to the Holy Rosary Church on 3rd Street, NW. Fourth Degree Knights from Virginia, Maryland and D.C. formed a smaller than usual contingent because of the limited space available at the alternate site.
