Fourth Degree Assemblies sponsor 8th Annual "Sweats for Vets"

January 18, 2014 - Dozens of Sir Knights from throughout Northern Virginia traveled to the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Martinsburg, West Virginia to distribute sweat suits donated by individual Knights and their families and many others from around the area for veterans who are being treated at the center.

The "Sweats for Vets" program was launched back in 2007 as a project of St. Elizabeth Bayley Seton Assembly 1781 (Sterling), and was expanded a year later to include John Paul II Assembly 2914 (Potomac Falls) and Fr. Robert O. Hickman Assembly 1883 (Winchester). The 2014 event drew participation from Knights in other area assemblies as well. Also participating were members of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Children from area schools wrote hundreds of "thank you" notes to the veterans, thanking them for their service, which were distributed to the vets at the medical center.

Also participating this year were Leesburg Mayor Kristen Umstattd and Purcellville Mayor Bob Lazaro, Jr. Acting Medical Center Director Tim Cooke welcomed all of the participants and thanked them for the support they provide to the center and the patients who receive care there. PFN Frank Nauer also thanked the participants, and gave a brief history of the "Sweats for Vets" program, which he developed with PFN Phil Rusciolelli in 2007.
